Japan’s Machine Tool Orders Rise 14.8% YoY in November 2025, Driven by Overseas Demand

The Japan Machine Tool Builders’ Association (JMTBA) reported that the total value of Japan’s machine tool orders reached 137.005 billion yen (USD 862.61 million) in November 2025, down 4.5% month-on-month (MoM) from October. This marked the first MoM decline in three months. However, on a year-on-year basis, orders rose 14.8%, extending the streak of YoY growth to five consecutive months, underscoring resilient global demand.

November also marked the ninth consecutive month in which total orders exceeded 120 billion yen., and the fifth straight month in which orders surpassed the level seen in the same period last year.

Domestic Orders in Japan - November 2025

Domestic orders in November reached 31.987 billion yen (USD 201.40 million), representing a 10.4% MoM decline and a 6.8% YoY decrease. This marked the first time in three months that domestic orders fell below 35 billion yen, reflecting continued weakness in domestic capital investment.

By major industry (MoM):

  • Automotive declined by 18.2%
  • Industrial machinery declined by 10.3%
  • Electronics & precision machinery declined by 11.8%
  • Aerospace, shipbuilding & transport equipment increased 74.2%, showing a sharp rebound

Foreign Orders - November 2025

Foreign orders climbed to 105.018 billion yen (USD 661.21 million), slipping 2.5% month-on-month, marking the first MoM decline in three months. However, they rose 23.6% year on year, extending the YoY growth streak to 14 consecutive months.

By region:

  • Asia: 54.296 billion yen (US$341.86 million), +5.4% MoM, +27.9% YoY

    • China: 38.128 billion yen (US$240.06 million), +20.0% MoM

    • India: 5.900 billion yen (US$37.15 million), +1.2% MoM

    • Thailand: 1.618 billion yen (US$10.19 million), −16.9% MoM

  • Europe: 18.141 billion yen (US$114.22 million), −10.2% MoM, but +25.8% YoY

  • North America: 29.421 billion yen (US$185.24 million), −12.3% MoM, +12.1% YoY

    • United States: 26.395 billion yen (US$166.19 million), −6.7% MoM
