Newly Registered Electric Vehicles (xEV) in January 2022

The Next-Generation Automotive Research Center under Thailand Automotive Institute released the report on the new registration of Electric Vehicles (xEV) and electric motorcycles as the followings:

The new registration for Electric Vehicles (xEV) in January 2022 totaled 5,321 units, increasing 49% (YoY), accounting for 5% of the total newly registered vehicles. 

  • For Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV), the new registration totaled 5,057 units, comprising 4,335 HEVs and 722 PHEVs, an increase of 7% (YoY) and 56%. (YoY) in order. 
  • The new registration for BEV totaled 264 units, an increase of 69% (YoY) and rising from 181 units in the previous month, according to the steady increasing public interest in EV.

The new registration for motor vehicles in January 2022 totaled 85,205 units, a decrease of 8% from the same period of the previous year. There were internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles totaled 79,884 units, accounting for 95% of the total newly registered vehicles and the growth rate decreased by 9%

In January 2022, the registration for new electric motorcycles totaled 365 units, decreasing from 665 units in the previous month. Accounting for 0.2% of the total newly registered motorcycles. 

There were only 20 HEVs and the growth rate continued to decline. This is the result from the performance and fuel consumption is not different from the ICE car, while the BEV is still popular. Although the BEV's volume was not much at 345 units, it's likely to continue to grow with an increasing 81% and almost all of them were personal motorcycles

  • For HEV, the new registration totaled 20 units, decreasing 95% (YoY) and the number was more than the previous year which 40 HEV motorcycles were registered.  

  • The new registration for BEV totaled 345 units, an increase of 81% (YoY) and the number rose from 625 units in the previous month. 

The new registration for motorcycles in January 2022 totaled 159,004 units, an increase of 7% from the same period of the previous year. There were internal combustion engine (ICE) motorcycles totaled 158,638 units, accounting for 99.8% of the total newly registered vehicles and the growth rate increased by 7%
